New friends

I brought a new friend home from the store today, and before you can make any jokes, I will tell you that it is a sansevieria (yes, another snake plant). This one should grow a little more traditionally (taller, growing straight up instead of a flower made of foliage).

Ever since my plants moved onto my parents’ side porch where the sun and humidity are, they’re doing much better. My lucky bamboo cuttings are sprouting leaves at last, and the bird’s nest snake plants are so happy that I’m having to take cuttings from them–they’re sprouting little friends left and right. I’m going to move my original lucky bamboo out there after this weekend after I’ve passed on one of the bird’s nest snake plants.  It’s consistently suffering from tip burn, likely as a result of the dry, cool climate inside the house, so hopefully the outdoor humidity will do it some good.

In which our hero recognizes changes must be made

As always, I’m working on a new schedule. Seems to be going well so far. It’s kind of like being grounded, but doing it to myself.

Busy doing things. I need get better about writing them down. I think new schedule will also help with that. Today is the first day I’m going to sit down and probably record things on time, here.

I woke up a little late today but got the things done that I wanted to (mostly). I boiled a huge pot of rice while I ate lunch so that I will have leftovers to eat off of for a while. I wanted rice and tempeh last night, but I got home from the gym too late to spend time making all of that and get to eat dinner before 9:30pm. We had some fresh pineapple left over from last week, so I decided to make pineapple fried rice to use most of the rest of it up. It turned out pretty well–I combined a couple of suggestions from Mark Bittman’s How to Cook Everything Vegetarian and added some hoisin sauce to complement the sweetness of the pineapple, and some red curry paste to give it the zing I always feel like it has at restaurants. I probably added a teeny bit too much hoisin (it was a little soggy), but it tastes good and the texture is pretty much correct aside from that.

I went out shopping earlier to get the last couple of things I needed to make the rice (a tomato, hoisin sauce, and red curry paste) and to mail a Mother’s Day card. I felt really odd getting in line to put one stamp on my tiny card  and buying a single tomato at Country Market. I needed to get Ted some Snickers bars, too, so I tacked that on to my weird assemblage of groceries. I went by Presbyterian Home to drop off the candy with him and we shared my coffee and talked a little bit before he headed off to dinner.

Spent a good chunk of the early evening cooking said rice. I brought my plants in a little while ago (I’ve started putting them on the side porch during the day), and one of my snake plants has managed to look good and bad at the same time–the leaves are perking up (although they’re also looking a little lighter), but there were gnats on it and what looked like a very light dusting of fuzzy white mold on the outside of the pot. It was easy to wipe off, but I don’t know that that’s going to do much good. I guess I’ll have to see if it comes back. I kind of feel exasperated about the damn things; they were fine the whole time I ignored them in my room at Allen, but now that I have time to pay attention to them, they’re having all kinds of problems. I also might put my little bamboo outside and see if sunlight will get it to start sprouting some leaves.

I’m going to keep it short this evening, since it’s almost my self-imposed internet curfew. More tomorrow.
